RE: A Rookies Tale

Congratulations on the new rig. Here's a thought- sell tickets to your backing up extravaganzas and that rig will be paid for in no time. LOL. My moment came when I pulled out of the dealership across 4 lanes (no traffic at the time) and all of a sudden -NO GO!. The engine strained, but nothing moved. Long story short, the emergency break away cable had somehow pulled loose and activated the TT brakes. Fixed it, found clean underwear in the glove compartment and went on my way.

RE: Gray tank not vented?

Chances are you do have a vent pipe and maybe some little critters decided to build themselves a home in the pipe. I'd climb up on top, remove the vent cap and clean things out. You also might want to go to the crossroads forum and check with the friendly folks over there.

RE: Tire myth or truth ??

You stated that the tire was " over 5 years old " and "well worn"- most likely the "wires " were the steel belting of that tire coming through and not the one that you blew out.Regardless, it needed to be replaced . You sure you're on the right thread Don ? I stated that my tires were about 2 years old (actually they're three years old)and had about 6,000 miles on them. Not sure where you got your info from.

RE: Tire myth or truth ??

It was the back tire that went. Interestingly enough it blew out the side wall on the curb side only, allowing the rim to roll on the tire carcass. No damage to the rim. What luck !. And yes my 'Camping Expert' buddies all said this with a straight face. I swear I heard some snickering later.

RE: Tire myth or truth ??

i'm with you, but, what caused the blowout?,you know how to change a flat, keep the inflation right, consider your use, maybe rotate it with the spare since you're playing with the tires and have to get a new one anyway. There's a nasty hole in the middle of the tread, about 1/4 inch in diameter. Whatever it was I picked up , it blew out (pure speculation on my part).Wish I could rotate tires, however I have the fancy rims and the spare is on a plain steel one. Changing the tire over is a PITA.

Tire myth or truth ??

Had a tire blow out on my TT. took less than a mile to pull over. Put on the spare and went on my way. Now my 'Camping Expert' buddies are telling me that I also need to replace the good tire because of the load I put on it for that one mile and the time it sat there while I changed the other tire. My tires are about two years old with about 6,000 miles on them. It's not that I'm cheap, I'm frugal and just can't see throwing away a good tire. Advice please. Thanks

Would these be the same designers that put the TV antenna crank over the middle of the bed ?!

RE: Ext Warranty on new unit worth it if manuf went kaput??

As 'doughere' said, these warranties are really a BIG money maker to the companies that sell them. I know, I made a real good living in the computer industry that way. Regardless as to who the manufacturer is, each unit is comprised of a host of sub assemblies, i.e. refer, A/C, heater, frame, tires, etc. Most, if not all of these do come with a warranty from the original manufacturer. Most of those manufacturers offer an 'extended' warranty. What I would suggest you do is look at these sub assemblies and try to find out their replacement costs, then weigh those costs against an extended warranty. If you're handy with tools and willing to spend a little time, I think you'll find that you really don't need this warranty.

RE: installing equa flex system

Where do I jack up my fifth wheel to install the equa flex system by Trailair? Should I use two jacks on the frame? Do I have to worry about twisting the frame? K If you like, I've developed a whole procedure for this when I installed my Equaflexunits. If you want a copy send an email to lutzmoeckel@gmail.com and put Equaflex in the subject line. It's a Word document.

RE: crossroads cruiser.

We've had our CF29CK since July of 2005. Gone out an average of once a month. Mostly local camping. Love the unit.No major problems, just a couple of minor ones. If you do a search on this site or go to the crossroads forum, you will find out that , yes, there is the occasional lemon. While that can't be helped, remember that the most important thing is that the company stands behind the product and will make it right. That comes thru loud and clear over and over again. Not so with a lot of their worthy competitors.

RE: one bad day and a ticket to

John, Thanks for a vivid reminder of what happens when you just have to get there 10 minutes earlier. Out here in SoCal I see these folks all the time, going like bat out of h*ll and then you see them further down the road with a blown tire. No thanks ! I'll stick with 55-60mph.

RE: Have Shocks & wanting to add Equa Flex Suspension

Equaflex,Mor-ryde etc. replace the steel spring equalizers between the front and rear trailer springs. I'm aware of where the Equaflex units are installed as I have done this on my 5er. That was not the question though.

RE: Have Shocks & wanting to add Equa Flex Suspension

My 5er has shocks and I added Equa Flex thinking it would improve the ride in the truck. I could see no difference after adding the Equa Flex in the truck or the 5er. Dumb question-Where does one add the Equaflex in or to a truck ?

RE: FORESTRIVER WARANTEE

I found out about 'Bumper to Bumper' warranties on my old pick up truck years ago. To me it meant anything between the front bumper and the rear bumper, i.e. the truck, would be covered. When it came time for a warranty repair, I found out that 'Bumper to Bumper' meant from the front bumper forward, around the world and then to the back bumper and the truck wasn't covered.Rest assured that I settled that little bit of misunderstanding with the dealer real quick.

RE: Installing Equa-Flex

I am going to have Equa-Flex installed on my 5th wheel Has anyone out there did this themselves. What I need to know is the best way to jack up the rv to get both wheels off the ground at the same time. I was thinking of using 2 jack on the frame is the best way. I installed mine over a year ago and developed an install procedure. For a copy, send an email to lutzmoeckel@gmail.com and I'll attach it as a word document.

RE: Trailair's Equa Flex

It sounds like this EquaFlex is a great way to calm down the chucking? Was wondering if any of you that have had them awhile and/or travel the I5 in So Cal have any updates after the install?Mine have been installed for about a year. It seems that every time we go somewhere (with our 5er)it involves going over the Grapevine and the infamous right lane. I can honestly say that the EquaFlex product has made a very positive difference in the towing experience. Also, things don't rattle and roll around that much in the 5er anymore.

RE: Exhaust Brakes, are they worth it, Can ( I ) install it?

I just finished installing an exhaust brake on my 01 F250 7.3L PSD. The brand I chose was from BD Power.I opted for the 'remote', i.e. down in the exhaust pipe install as opposed to the Turbo mounted unit. For me it was a bit easier than climbing on top of the engine and working from there. I'll be testing it over the next few days and will let you know the results Suggestion, both PacBrake and BD Power publish their manuals online in pdf form for easy down loading. Also look at USGear. BD Power also recommended an Autoloc module that controls your torque converter. You might want to check out the forum at www.ford-trucks.com. Lots of good advice and nice folks. One last thing, if you don't have the extra gages, such as EGT, tranny temp, boost, work those into your budget. You'll thank me later.

RE: rough ride from chucking

Your question will bring you about a thousand answers and the bottom line is, like always, time and money. How much time and how much money are you willing to invest. The following has worked for me: 1. Replaced the equalizer links at the axles with Equaflex units. 2.Changed from an 'economy hitch' (the type that just uses a rod with a piece of flatbar welded to it) to one where the jaw mechanism encircles the king pin. My brand happens to be Husky, there's also Pullrite, and a few others out there. 3. Installed airbags over the TV axel. Some folks swear by Mor/Ryde and similar kingpin devises. So sit back and watch the advice roll in.

RE: Brake Controller

bjbear, Judging website construction vs. product construction cuts both ways, i.e. crummy web sites-excellent product; excellent web sites, crummy product. I'm here to tell you that the Brakesmart is a both a first class product and a user proven product. It requires essentially zero support. As far as contacting them, I haven't had any problems, either via email or phone. Then again, maybe they're having a bad hair day. They're allowed.
